DAVID WALKER’S APPEAL
David Walker was a free black man who lived in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1800's. He wrote a scathing attack on the institution of slavery and white racism
which he published himself in the form of a pamphlet. In his writing he urged
the slaves to revolt and overthrow their masters. He managed to get his pamphlet in the hands of many slaves in the south. White people in all sections of the country were appalled at the radical nature of his writing, and slave owners had genuine fears that
his words would spark slave uprisings.
