HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
There is an interesting and powerful story behind the picture that appears on this T-shirt. Prominent pottery designer Josiah Wedgewood had one of his craftsmen design the image. It appeared on jewelry items such as cufflinks and pins, and on posters and pamphlets in much the same way that campaign buttons and posters are used in elections and political movements of today. This image became an instrumental part of the anti-slavery movement that began in England in the late 1700's. Adam Hochschild wrote a fascinating account of the British abolitionist crusade in his book "Bury the Chains." He points out that the use of Wedgewood's image was "probably the first widespread use of a logo designed for a political cause."
